In honor of the 70th anniversary of the movie, here is some trivia about Gone With the Wind.
- It was the first color film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
- The black actors, including Hattie McDaniel who later won an Oscar for her performance (the first Black actor to win one) were not allowed to attend the premiere because it was held in Atlanta where segregation was strictly enforced.
- Gary Cooper was originally desired to play Rhett Butler, but turned it down expecting the film to fall flat on its face.
- All four principal characters appear together in the same scene only once, after the raid on Shantytown, when Rhett tells the anxious group of the fate of Scarlett's second husband, Frank Kennedy.
- 1,400 actresses were interviewed for the part of Scarlett O'Hara. But, noone was hired by the time filming began. Vivien Leigh was hired on the day they filmed the Burning of Atlanta Scene (which was done by setting fire to old sets).
